How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

The American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist every six months for regular checkups and teeth cleanings. For routine visits, your appointment will last approximately 45 minutes.

Will I Need  Xrays at my visit?

We recommend bitewing x-rays once every year and Panoramic X-rays, which give a broad view of the mouth, every 3-5 years.  All of our xrays are digital and expose you to the least amount of radiation possible.

Is there a correct way to brush?

You should brush in circular motions for at least 2 minutes.

How often should I brush?

Ideally you should brush after every meal and at the very least twice a day.  Brushing before bedtime is especially important.

How  often should I change my toothbrush?

We recommend you change your toothbrush every three months.

Why is it important to floss?

While brushing removes food, plaque and bacteria from the teeth, flossing removes plaque build-up and is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gums.  When plaque builds up between the teeth, it can result in cavities, inflamed gums and even periodontal disease.  At Woodside Smile Dental, we recommend flossing each night before bedtime, for approximately 2-3 minutes.

How do I floss properly?

We recommend using an amount of floss equal to the length from your hand to your elbow.  Using your thumbs and forefingers, glide the floss between each tooth.  Slightly curve the floss around each tooth and under the gumline, cleaning on each side.

What do I do if I have bad breath?

Bad breath or halitosis can be a sign of poor oral hygiene.  Make certain you brush and floss daily and visit your dentist regularly.  Antibacterial mouth rinses can also help.  Stop smoking or using tobacco and drink plenty of water.  Some medications also can cause dry mouth which can lead to halitosis.  Speak to your Doctor if you suspect this is a factor.

What if I am a fearful dental patient?

The Dentists at Woodside Smile Dental make every effort to make your visit as comfortable as possible.  You have your choice of anesthesia and we assure you procedures will be pain free.
